Clearest of Days for the Hollywood Sign

The weekend saw windy conditions. The moisture in the air was driven off by winds blowing from the desert (east) into the Los Angeles "basin". I cannot recall ever seeing Mount Lee in such detail as yesterday. The closest the camera can now get to the Hollywood Sign is at Sunset Blvd. It was a block further north, at Selma Avenue, but construction of buildings along Hollywood Boulevard now prevents being able to photograph the Sign that much closer. Hollywood and Los Angeles have an almost misty atmosphere at all times. This often expresses itself as a feeling of delightfully fresh air. Today, with the rain from a day or two ago gone and high winds removing this mistiness, the Hollywood Sign, atop Mount Lee showed a clarity you can seldom see.

A Particularly Clear Hollywood Day

With the temperature in the mid-80s (27-28 C) and the relative humidity 14%, the sky could not be more clear. I saw no clouds as I snapped this photo of the Hollywood sign.


Mount Lee, on which the sign is located, is often obscured from fine detail, but not today. I'm standing in the intersection of El Centro Avenue and Selma Avenue and am approximately 2.3 miles from the Hollywood sign.

The Hollywood Sign on the Clearest of Days, Red Studios -Silent Movie-, Another Fashion Event at the W

A busy day taking photos. Los Angeles County had high winds Monday, (26-Oct-2010) and that blew the fog, particulate matter, a.k.a., smog, and smoke out of the basin. What that means is the air is clear and sweet smelling. A real treat for those living in one of the most densely packed places on the planet. These are pictures, from slightly differing angles, of the Hollywood sign. The day was partly sunny, but at the time of these photos, the sky was mostly cloudy.

Tomorrow, along Selma Avenue CBS will be shooting: Battleship. Shooting some scenes from it, anyway. The use of a street (a public street), for commercial purposes, requires a permit from the government and this is a picture of that authorization.


The interior courtyard bar at the W Hotel is often the venue for fashionistas. I snapped a pix of this Forever 21 photo booth there. Note the credit card companies logos for buying your photos. So this booth takes photos and credit cards, too!

While flaneuring past the former Ren-Mar Studios, which is now the Red Studios, there is an unusual structure built for a film. I asked the security guard what was doing and he said a French motion picture, was being shot there. I'll post another picture of it and some particulars.

Sign By Design - The World Famous Hollywood Sign

The World Famous Hollywood Sign is in danger of being removed by real estate developers. The Sign, which sits near the summit of Mount Lee, has become a symbol of all things Hollywood. The Trust for Public Land has started a campaign to "Save the Sign". About 12 million dollars is needed to put the sign into park space and conserve it in perpetuity.

The Trust's webpage shows this photo of the sign being draped with new wording. This isn't the first time such a change has happened. some University of Southern California students draped it to make it read Hollyweed some decades ago.

The sign was originally an advertisement for land in Hollywood. In the beginning it said, 

Hollywoodland

Bar Celona, Delacey's Club 41 and Pasadena

This is a photo of Bar Celona, a visual play on words for the Spanish city of Barcelona. Sitting on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, California, it is a modern style establishment.

Some of the Rounder's viewers may ask: "Is Pasadena even near Hollywood?", and the answer must be, Hollywood is continously using parts of Pasadena to shoot movies and TV shows in. For example, Judging Amy sometimes has scenes in a restaurant in Pasadena, Delacey's Club 41. However it is true that one cannot see the Hollywood sign from Pasadena. The purist in me thinks that one has to see the sign, in order to qualify being in Hollywood.
