Today, with the rain from a day or two ago gone and high winds removing this mistiness, the Hollywood Sign, atop Mount Lee showed a clarity you can seldom see.

All outdoor filming is done with lots and lots of security, both private rent-a-cops as well as off-duty Los Angeles Police Dept. officers. (replete with firearms). I have somewhat of an insider's view of this neighborhood and these places aren't able to weather the recession. The following are up for sale as well: Cafe W as, Beauty Bar, Atlantic Bar and Grill, and the Spotlight Bar. That's what becomes of trendy. Trendy clothing, OK, trendy food, ho-hum, trendy business? No Thanks.

The Last Greasy Spoon in Hollywood

Three years later, after a lot of "community activist" involvement in this property, it is being replace by a high rise building. Where the greasy spoon was is not this.

Yours truly never ate at this one. It just looks to ill kept. They were there for decades, little "kiosk" like food stands in Hollywood. They served sandwiches mostly. A few were juice bars. Now this is the last one and it's a goner, too. The parking lot, unseen in this photo, but in the foreground and to the left, as well as the Montalban Theater (background) and Molly's are all going under the wrecking ball to make way for a five or six story . . . development. I can't say I'm sorry to see Molly's go, but what's replacing it isn't likely to be better.


Hollywood survives as a place mostly on tourism.  They are the only group that can afford the luxuries that Hollywood as a brand name offers. The zipcodes around the area, 90028, 90038, 90029, are some of the most over-crowded parts of Los Angeles. The people living here (about 25,000 per square mile) are mostly tenants, many retirees. The trend in trendy Hollywood has been to claim to be luxurious, while trying to appeal to as broad a section of the public as possible. It isn't called the petit-bourgeois for no reason.

While shopping for fish for tonight's dinner, I came across these two people at the Pavillion's market at Melrose and Vine.

The lady told me that the store had some Tillamook Vintage White Cheddar. I adore sharp cheddar. So with my $1 off the price coupon I am now the owner of 8 ozs. of sharp cheddar. I had thought of Welsh Rabbit, but am going to make an appetizer of this cheese, as it should be tasty.

A Particularly Clear Hollywood Day

With the temperature in the mid-80s (27-28 C) and the relative humidity 14%, the sky could not be more clear. I saw no clouds as I snapped this photo of the Hollywood sign.


Mount Lee, on which the sign is located, is often obscured from fine detail, but not today. I'm standing in the intersection of El Centro Avenue and Selma Avenue and am approximately 2.3 miles from the Hollywood sign.

Subway To Nowhere

The W Hotel shares a front courtyard with the Red Line Subway. The whole of the area is a large pedestrian walkway and some joker, with a good sense of humor, pasted this informative sign on the entrance to the subway. I shot this on February 8, 2011 and today is March 19, 2011 and it' still up.

Formerly the Earl Jean clothing store and then the Legion clothing store, now there is going to be a Goorin Brothers Hat Shop. Goorin's other hat shop is quite close in Melrose Avenue. Maybe you had better buy two hats. After the opening, I will post a follow up photo.
