Trompe-l'œil Art Deco Apartment Building in Hollywood

Trompe-l'œil

I've posted about this apartment building before. When I first saw it, I thought: "No Way!" but it has finally been completed. So I was quite pleasantly surprised to see that the south facade of the building is being painted to look like a proscenium arched stage. The curtains are being pulled back from the right side of the stage, and you, dear audience, can now see the show. Notice the painter in the upper left corner finishing the illusion. This is the first piece of Trompe-l'œil I've ever seen in Hollywood. In the foreground is a parking lot that once was a nightclub Basque where Lindsay Lohan celebrated a birthday. It burned down under mysterious circumstances and was never rebuilt. I'm somewhat incredulous that what replaced the club was a parking lot.

Art Deco Building

The wonderful side of living in Hollywood California is evinced by this building. With it's beautiful Spanish tile roof and white stucco exterior, it is both Moorish and Spanish in feel. The building stretches another hundred and twenty feet to the right of this view. As I was there on a Sunday, I didn't look to see if this is an office building or residential apartments. Located just above Sunset Blvd, along (or just off of) Schrader Blvd, directly behind 6525 West Sunset Boulevard.

Facades Real & Fake

When the City of Los Angeles decided to remodel an entire city block, their were protests and anger from the business owner's who were having their livelihood "taken". The W Hotel block, of which I've posted before, is the remodel. What remains is the former facade of the luggage store and juice bar. This is the same treatment that was given to Merv Griffin's former TV studio, a little further south on Vine.

15 Seconds of Fame

W Hotel in Hollywood - part of the W chain

This is the W Hotel, seen from Sunset Blvd., looking at the east side of the building. It won't open until December 2009. The building occupies the block from Vine Street to Argyle and from Hollywood Blvd. to Selma Avenue.
