The Last Greasy Spoon in Hollywood

Last of the Hollywood "joints"

Yours truly never ate at this one. It just looks to ill kept. They were there for decades, little "kiosk" like food stands in Hollywood. They served sandwiches mostly. A few were juice bars. Now this is the last one and it's a goner, too. The parking lot, unseen in this photo, but in the foreground and to the left, as well as the Montalban Theater (background) and Molly's are all going under the wrecking ball to make way for a five or six story . . . development. I can't say I'm sorry to see Molly's go, but what's replacing it isn't likely to be better.

Hollywood survives as a place mostly on tourism. They are the only group that can afford the luxuries that Hollywood as a brand name offers. The zipcodes around the area, 90028, 90038, 90029, are some of the most over-crowded parts of Los Angeles. The people living here (about 25,000 per square mile) are mostly tenants, many retirees. The trend in trendy Hollywood has been to claim to be luxurious, while trying to appeal to as broad a section of the public as possible. It isn't called the petit-bourgeois for no reason.

He was famous for his local TV commercials. "I'll paint any car any color for $19.95" he would shout into the microphone.

I was on my way to see how Space 15-20 is fairing and found a new place to get an espresso there. Actually, they have drip coffee, but some exotic varietals of beans. And you cannot get a more cozy place to sip. This Koffee Klatch Kart is nestled on the east end of place. One of the merchants, a clothier, has moved. And in it's place is an analog audio stereo store. So, if you go to check out the turntables and non-iPOD stuff, you can get a cuppa joe and sit and enjoy.

This picture shows the reason I love Mexico. It makes me smile just to see this. I love the rusticity of the scene and the complete lack of accurate perspective. We just cannot do this type of art in the U.S. Even though I question the notion and name: The Queen of Tacos, we Americans do have a "Burger King" so, it's not all that outlandish. Sí ¿cómo no?

Frankly, I was just getting -used to- wine in a box, when at the supermarket today, I saw instead of 3 liters of wine in a box:

500 mL or 2/3 of a (glass) bottle of wine, which is 750mL or 25 fl. ozs. In case you are asking, no, I didn't sample the vintage.

Vendange is an odd French term for late harvest grapes, which, the selection at this market certainly isn't. Vendange, the maker, markets these wines as "destination wines". At least these wines are air-tight.

With the temperature in the mid-80s (27-28 C) and the relative humidity 14%, the sky could not be more clear. I saw no clouds as I snapped this photo of the Hollywood sign.

Mount Lee, on which the sign is located, is often obscured from fine detail, but not today. I'm standing in the intersection of El Centro Avenue and Selma Avenue and am approximately 2.3 miles from the Hollywood sign.

Native Fry Bread - At the Arclight, More Private Practice ephemera, Another Prop Girlfriend and Liza Weil (Paris of the Gilmore Girls tv show)

Fry Bread is a Native American speciality food. I was most surprised to see this food truck parked on Sunset Blvd., directly in front of the ArcLight movie theater.

The sign reads: Please be advised - Bricks and Scones from 3pm will be closed on the following date(s) - Friday April 8, for the filming of the television show entitled: "Private Practice". We apologize for any inconvenience.

If you click to enlarge this photo on the right, you will see orange traffic cones from the place where the camera was to the corner at Rosewood Avenue. This is a distance of about 300 or more feet. Private Practice was filming at Bricks & Scones (of which I have posted at this blog) and the production trucks fill all of the west side of Larchmont Blvd. and on Rosewood from Larchmont to Lucerne. That's lots of trucks, etc.

Another PROP girlfriend - not Liza

One of these days, I'm gonna get lucky with one of these gals. However, just as an aside, I saw Liza Weil (Paris on the Gilmore Girls) on Larchmont a few days ago. I recognized her and said: "Is your name Liza?" To which she responded by stopping and asking "Yes, how do I know you?" and I replied "I'm just a fan of Gilmore". She started to depart when I asked if I could take her photo, holding my camera up in my hand, so she could see I was ready and would not unduely take her time. But she had her infant in a sling on her front and declined, saying she didn't want photos of the kid. Which, I respected. With regret, audience, I have no photo of her.

If I see Miss Weil on the Boulevard again, I'll see if she will oblige the readers of The Hollywood Rounder.

Subway To Nowhere

The W Hotel shares a front courtyard with the Red Line Subway. The whole of the area is a large pedestrian walkway and some joker, with a good sense of humor, pasted this informative sign on the entrance to the subway. I shot this on February 8, 2011 and today is March 19, 2011 and it' still up.

Can You See Me Now?

Traveling down El Centro Avenue, near the eight-hundred block, I snapped this shot of a Google Street View vehicle.

Notice the red ball on top, looking a lot like a soccer (rest of the world: football) ball. I had hopes that the driver would return to his car and I could get my image onto Google Maps, somehow or other. That didn't happen, so you, my adoring public will have to wait.

In the background of this photo is the former Hollyhock Orphans Home where as a child, Norma Jean Mortenson, AKA Marylin Monroe lived. Hollyhock was eventually converted in a magnet school for the Los Angeles school district.

Border's Books and I Am Number Four Advertising

I read that Borders Bookstores are in bankruptcy and am happy to say that the store at Sunset Blvd. and Vine Street is staying open. This first pix is Borders Books at the north west corner of the intersection of Sunset and Vine, Hollywood, California. I am standing at the Nickelodeon Theater.

Borders' has an outside patio. As well as an inside seating area with a Seattle's Best Coffee (shop). This picture shows both and I thought it rather a novel view of the bookstore.

After taking the Borders' pix, I wandered up to Ivar at Selma and what to my wondering eyes, beheld:

Someone was standing outside, smoking and I asked to take this photo and got permission (not legally necessary, but politeness dictates asking) and was given a sweatshirt (hoody) and a unusually large poster for the movie. This was courtesy of the oddly named 43Kix, which is an advertising and p.r. firm. If you are planning to visit Hollywood and have an SMS or text messaging capable cellphone and don't mind sharing that with them, you can find free passes to movies and other bling-bling goodness.

Old School Hollywood - Dupar's at the Farmer's Market (3rd St. and Fairfax Ave.)

This is the south side driveway of the Farmer's Market. The clock tower in the background is one of two at the Farmer's Market. Used as a meeting place since the 1930s, many celebrities and talents from the entertainment industry say: "Meet me at the clock tower". Diagonally from the corner of 3rd and Fairfax is the WGA-W or Writer's Guild of America West.

Closed for the Oscars 2011 edition

I'm guessing but I believe that this is the longest, ever, that Hollywood Blvd. is going to be closed to automobile traffic between Highland Avenue and La Brea Avenue, due to the Oscar ceremony.

These information lights, (nothing like: "Your Name in Lights") are at the north west corner of the intersection of Vine Street and Hollywood Boulevard.

While there is too little to photograph, immediately to the right of where this picture was taken, in the parking lot that was built after Basque the nightclub was torn down. This is where Lindsay Lohan celebrated her 21st birthday. What is there now is large wooden crates, some airfreight from Korea. A large, fancy porta-potty was near the property line with the Redbury Hotel. Usually commodes that nice are for film productions. But, it could be that an Oscar party will be hosted on that parking lot, under a tent. Or it could be a station for caterers to prep food for a party at the W or the Redbury.

Giant Obediance Problems and Phydough Pet Snack Catering Truck

Cruising down Selma Ave. on Sunday afternoon, I found some graffiti on a poster-sized scale. I call it graffiti because it's not art and it's freeloading on someone's property, usually without permission. You could never see this in a gallery. This style of art is reminiscent of advertising in magazines and matchbooks mid 20th century. Picturted is the south west corner of the intersection of Wilcox Ave. and Selma Ave. The poster reads:

Next on my Sunday outing was the irregular appearance of this catering truck. This is the oddest of the trendy travelling roach-coaches in Los Angeles. About 3 years ago, somebody had the idea to combine taco truck catering cuisine with Korean food. For example, beef taco with kimchi. Why this idea caught the attention of the Los Angeles Times newspaper's food editors I don't know. I suppose it's a dog-bites-man style story. This has spawned dozens of these kitsch playtoys. The public flocks to them and they have started to become a nuisance to regular (mortar and brick) restaurants. The City Fathers have enacted new regulations to limit these coaches. Fights have broken out in neighborhoods, where multiples of these trucks occupy parking spaces. I will keep my breathlessly awaiting public word of any late developments.

I have previously posted about the taco truck tie-in with the Robert Rodriguez movie Machete. As I see more of the I will start to post them. Although, I will not eat at them, unless cajoled.

I apologize, in advance for this entries title. I was hoping for a rhyme, but it's early, I haven't had my coffee and . . . please view the photos and forget the title of this post.

The green colored sign reads: Zip Cars. These are shared vehicles. You sign up and pay only when you use the vehicle, returning it to any available Zip parking space. I'm confused as to what happens if there is no parking place. Do they report the car as stolen?

When I took this pix, the guys putting up the billboard wanted "Star" billing, but all they got was Vulcanized, as their agent has no clout with me.

Almost an alternative form of transportation. This photo included as I had never heard of the Garelli brand, before. I believe Garelli is not making mo-peds and this is therefore, a picture of an antique. Ah semi-antique.

I watch this show, as I discovered actress Summer Glau in Firefox and then Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. She is cast in science fiction shows, so far, but, underlying that tough girl exterior, I think there is a comedian.

I've posted before about crews needing City of Los Angeles film permits to shoot on public streets. Here is a rogue shoot on Larchmont Blvd.

In the background, unseen, are the hair and makeup artists.

I wonder if the model's arms got tired after all that heavy lifting?

The sign is going up. Sunset and Vine (south-east corner) can now boast of it's burger. I'm impressed that GoBurger uses a mixture of beef cuts, however.

Berklee College of Music is located in Boston Massachusetts. I was surprised to see representatives here in Hollywood, but the room was almost crowded with talent. Berklee is the alma matter of some of the most famous musicians in the world today. Salsa King, Juan Luis Guerra is a Berklee graduate, as well as Gavin DeGraw, Al Di Meola, Melissa Etheridge, Quincy Jones, John Mayer . . . I could go through the whole list but that would take a lot of your time, too.

Trashy is Patriotic?

Long before Victoria's Secret lingerie was sold, Frederick's of Hollywood was on the Boulevard. Their catalogs went out, worldwide. They were the but of jokes by any number of stand-up comics and their lingerie was truly trashy. Times have changed and so did the original Frederick's of Hollywood's location. They have moved into better quarters, closer to Hollywood Blvd. at Highland (now a major shopping mall). Their lingerie isn't as trashy, either.

What is left is cheaper, even trashier lingerie shops, if that is even possible. They have all been there for years and this is a sampling of the current storefront windows. (mostly for guys)

Up On The Boulevard

This is how concierges get the tickets to special events that "you and I" have no access to.

Here is the sign on the trompe l'oeil building I posted about a while ago. It's a hotel. And that is passing strange as there are now two upscale hotels within shouting distance of the intersection of Vine Street and Hollywood Blvd. Those being the W hotel and the Redbury, pictured here. The W is modern in style and the Redbury is, for lack of a better term, fanciful.

At the former Nickelodeon Theater (6230 Sunset Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90028), the crew was setting this up outdoors, in the parking lot. This looks to be a stage for a live performance, not a feature film or tv episode. Nickelodeon Studios was the owner of this property until a year or so ago. Your Hollywood Rounder apologizes for not knowing the name of the current owner, and will post that sooner or later.

Soon: pictures of trashy lingerie from Hollywood Boulevard's trashy lingerie shops. And I do mean trashy.

Los Angeles is having it's comic relief from winter. The daytime high temperatures starting Friday (14-Jan-2011) have been in the 80s. (27 C.) and will continue in the mild 70s (~24 C.) this week. The temperate weather has given me time to get out and explore. Hence, without further ado:

David Nelson, older brother of Ricky Nelson died last week. David, Ricky, Ozzie and Harriet Nelson appeared on a TV show in the 1950s. The show, eponymously titled: The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, was a slice of American life then. David was portrayed as the more sensible and intellectual brother to Ricky's rock-'n-roll temperament.

This modern Paul Klee-esque building (probably condos) is located at 1141 N. Formosa Avenue in West Hollywood. It is situated amongst much cheaper, older and uglier apartment buildings. It is quite striking to meander down Formosa Avenue and see this building.

This is an update on the billboard advertising on the apartment-retail complex as the north-west corner of Sunset Blvd. and Vine Street.

FilmLA Permit Notice

This is the type of "notice" you see on the streets of Hollywood, whenever a shoot takes place in public. The production company, in this instance ABC Studios, must pay a fee to use the public street or in this case sidewalk. Also, the restaurant Girasole, will be used as a set for some food business at Private Practice (stars Kate Walsh). As the restaurant must close for this, it too receives lots of bucks to close and turn it's customers away for a day.

I don't much want to tell you about Girasole. It's my favorite Italian restaurant in LA. Ernani, the owner is Italian and he goes out of his way to get fresh water buffalo mozzarella, every day. And the sausages are made only for the restaurant.

The place gets crowded enough for real. I will have to wait on-line like all the other customers if the show makes this place even more popular.

Olvera Street - The Origin of Los Angeles California

Olvera Street is a remnant of the original portion of Los Angeles California. I've taken the step of visiting each Christmas and taking some photos. This year, 2010 hasn't been especially festive. That is probably due to the recession.

This door was the most festive photo I could take.

Here is a family happy to see their Hollywood Rounder. I'm joking, they are happy to see someone sharing their cultural ideas about the Birth of Christ. A few moments before I shot this, I helped this family take a group photo. The entire family. It was my one and only good deed for Christmas 2010. I learned my lesson about good Christmas deeds last year.

They are from the State of Veracruz in Mexico. Xalapa is the capitol of Veracruz. An interesting tidbit about Jalapa. It is the State of Mexico famous for the jalapeño. But, in Veracruz, the chile is called a Cuaresma chile. That is also why in Veracruz, it's an X and not a J. Either way, it's mighty tasty.

Today is a cloudless, sunny, spectacularly beautiful winter's day in L.A. - If you have read this 'blog for any length of time you know I'm not the greatest fan of Los Angeles, but today (today's weather) surpasses petty problems.

Hollywood On A Perfect Day

This is the Hollywood sign from in the intersection of El Centro Avenue and Selma Avenue. I'm standing in the El Centro southbound lane and using the full zoom. Where I am standing is approximately 2.4 miles (3.8 KM) from the sign "as the crow flies".

The Theatre of Note is on Cahuenga Blvd. They have been there for a lot longer than the current crop of in-spots, nightclubs, restaurants and assorted tattoo parlors.

I cannot help but find the name of this theater a tad odd. First, they spell theater with the English usage of: theatre. I cannot pronounce the tre as a sound, so I spell it in American English. I can say: ter without difficulty. Second: Using Note in their name reminds me of Post-It notes, so I planted a note on their Theatre and hope they 'get' my joke.

An actress I adore, Stana Katic (Castle on ABC-tv), has created the Alternative Travel Project. The ATP encourages everyone to give up their car for seven days and use alternate means of travel. By Bus, subway, bicycle or walking.

I took a photo of myself, on my bike, pedaling past the Arclight Cinema in Hollywood, and have submitted it to the growing gallery of photos of people who have committed to this project.

Ordinarily, I don't much get involved with causes, but as Ms. Katic asked me for a photo, I was happy to oblige.

I met the Production Manager of The Artist, today. And I'm fully armed with the facts for once. The film's name is: The Artist. It's about a silent screen movie star. The car, pictured a few days ago is a prop Bugatti. Not a real Bugatti. The set building and painting is getting done and she invited me back to get some more photos next week. I promise to do that. Ah! - It's not an HBO production. It's a motion picture for the French film market, being made in Los Angeles California. Go Figure!

Dateline: Wednesday 27 October, 2010. Place: Selma Avenue and El Centro Avenue. Scene: From the forthcoming CBS feature: Battleship. This scene, involves a car crashing with a dump truck. What many of you don't know about movies is that each scene, no matter how short, can take hours to set up and then, if everything isn't perfect, it must be done all over again until it is perfect. As your Hollywood Rounder always wants to show you all that is vibrate, beautiful and fun in Hollywood California, he strayed up to this film set. But, even he cannot wait around for hours to get the "just right" shot. So, without more fanfare folks:

This car is going to be seen in a HBO film. Someone I spoke with said it's a film about a silent movie. At least that's what I was told, but I'm starting to think, someone is pulling my leg. It's a prop car. It has a seat belt, so it may have an engine, too.

Above is a painter and I will show you the results of her craft, soon. Two days later, the wooden boards are being plastered and I'm hoping that Friday or Saturday will be some acting.

The Hollywood Sign on the Clearest of Days, Red Studios -Silent Movie-, Another Fashion Event at the W

A busy day taking photos. Los Angeles County had high winds Monday, (26-Oct-2010) and that blew the fog, particulate matter, a.k.a., smog, and smoke out of the basin. What that means is the air is clear and sweet smelling. A real treat for those living in one of the most densely packed places on the planet. These are pictures, from slightly differing angles, of the Hollywood sign. The day was partly sunny, but at the time of these photos, the sky was mostly cloudy.

Tomorrow, along Selma Avenue CBS will be shooting: Battleship. Shooting some scenes from it, anyway. The use of a street (a public street), for commercial purposes, requires a permit from the government and this is a picture of that authorization.

The interior courtyard bar at the W Hotel is often the venue for fashionistas. I snapped a pix of this Forever 21 photo booth there. Note the credit card companies logos for buying your photos. So this booth takes photos and credit cards, too!

While flaneuring past the former Ren-Mar Studios, which is now the Red Studios, there is an unusual structure built for a film. I asked the security guard what was doing and he said a French motion picture, was being shot there. I'll post another picture of it and some particulars.

This girl only recently moved to Hollywood. She is a singer and actress. Maybe a songwriter as well. I didn't have much of a chance to talk to her as she was off to find somewhere to live. Now I could tell you her name, but what if she becomes famous? Then there won't be a surprise.

We met at the Coffee Bean on Larchmont. The woman was exhausted from house-hunting.

She says she is from somewhere near Manhattan or Detroit. Maybe she's had too much caffeine. It doesn't matter. She has a nice smile and I can tell she has a winning personality.

What With Hallowe'en Just Around The Corner

Hallowe'en. That is how it used to be spelled when I was only old enough to go Trick or Treating. That has changed and Hallowe'en (or All Hallows Day Evening, the day before All Hallows Day) has been a day that, for Los Angeles, in general, and Hollywood most specifically, a day for the crazies to pretend to party. Hollywood Boulevard fills with people in costume and the City of West Hollywood, takes on a zeitgeist that is almost a frenzy. Of course, there is no parking in L.A., so on occasions like Hallowe'en, it's best to be on foot.

There are few school aged children in Hollywood during Hallowe'en. Probably fewer still in West Hollywood. School aged children are taken to upscale Hancock Park, Beverly Hills or other more residential neighborhoods for their trick-or-treating.

I've posted before about the police, and the City of LA banning silly string on Hallowe'en. And in California, there is a state law that prohibits wearing a mask so as to disguise one's identity. Needless to say, the jails couldn't hold the number of people in West Hollywood alone, let alone getting the felonious felons off the streets of Hollywood.

While looking for some printer paper at Office Depot on Sunday last, I chanced across what, to my mind, was an illegal shoot. It could be that this crew had the permit, insurance and such, but something made me think it was a hot job. Not that I'm morally concerned. I only thought the woman attractive and the director was highly dissatisfied with her work. And such a nice looking babe, too.

Hellacious Hellcats (TV series), Stripped Naked? and As Rare As It Can Be

The CW Network has done a lot of promoting of the show titled: Hellcats. I like this photo because it's on the side of a bus for one thing and the bus it parked under the W Hotel for another.

The picture, left, is a play on photo-graphs. Or at least that what I want it to be. The store is Urban Outfitters and the picture is of a customer in the store. I'm taking the picture from outside. Ecoté means stripped. Don't ask I have no idea. They sell clothing, which is oxymoronic of nudity. Or something like that. In any case, the customer is dressed and hasn't been stripped of his $$$.

Trompe-l'œil Art Deco Apartment Building in Hollywood

I've posted about this apartment building before. When I first saw it, I thought: "No Way!" but it has finally been completed. So I was quite pleasantly surprised to see that the south facade of the building is being painted to look like a proscenium arched stage. The curtains are being pulled back from the right side of the stage, and you, dear audience, can now see the show. Notice the painter in the upper left corner finishing the illusion. This is the first piece of Trompe-l'œil I've ever seen in Hollywood. In the foreground is a parking lot that once was a nightclub Basque where Lindsay Lohan celebrated a birthday. It burned down under mysterious circumstances and was never rebuilt. I'm somewhat incredulous that what replaced the club was a parking lot.

Volkswagon Shoot in Hancock Park

While you would never know to look at it, Hancock Park is one of the most photographed sections of Los Angeles. Located near to Hollywood (zipcode 90028), Hancock Park is in zipcodes: 90004 and 90010. It is the nicest upscale neighborhood near to Hollywood short of the Hollywood Hills themselves. This was a very big shoot, with productions trucks on all sides of the intersection (unpictured). The soundman is in the background, just to the left of the vehicle.

Arriving back on Lucerne Blvd. this morning, the set isn't even there. However there was a nice security guard and he told me that the scene was to be a nighttime shoot.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of Dexter. So this is likely to be all that I'll get pix of. The red cone is one of 20 or more, lining the pavement. The wires are for lights and all the other appliances that need electricity.

500 Block of North Lucerne

While cruising down Lucerne Blvd. (a mis-nomer) Blvd. implies thoroughfare and Lucerne isn't anywhere near that, yesterday, I saw that some shoot was going to be done there. So, I snapped a quick pix of the parking situation. As Your Hollywood Rounder is a fast reader it didn't take long to get through the rules & regs of parking. And, as a courtesy to my many readers, I will sum it up for you: Don't Park Here. That shot is taken on Sunday, last.
Come Tuesday, August 17th, they are starting to set up and a stake bed truck has arrived with a palm tree and some other greenery. As the shoot probably starts tomorrow, I'll swing by and try to get a shot of something more entertaining.

If you hurry, you can get to this shoot. It's located at the corner of Lucerne Blvd. and Rosewood Ave. near Hancock Park. Second house on the left is most likely the location. It has a silvery roof.

Special Event Ahead

This is Sunset Blvd. looking west towards Vine Street. The Bank of America sign is visible. Usually, the Arclight Theater is the scene of movie premiers and as such, the city of LA closes the south side of Sunset, where the Arclight is. I've never seen a street closure like this before, except for the Oscars on Hollywood Blvd. so, dear readers, stay tuned. I will try to get some photos, tomorrow. Monday August 16th. I've returned up to Sunset Blvd. and lots of activity at the Arclight, which hosts the premier of the movie The Switch. Jason Batman and Jennifer Aniston star in this vehicle.

The Expendables - Raises a Flag

Your Rounder, ever vigilant for the Artistic and Beautiful presents the latest in Hollywood Pubic Relations and Advertising. While on my way to Border's Books, I chanced to see a large flag, flying from the former Corporate Headquarters of CBS television. Located at Sunset Blvd. near El Centro Avenue, the winds aloft weren't quite high enough to blow this flag to full staff, but it can be easily read to know that it's advertising for The Expendables.

Machete the Taco Truck, House of Blues a goner & Ice Cream Cones for All

While wandering over to CNN to collect my vehicle on Sunday, I chanced by the Machete taco truck. It was parked on the north side of Sunset Blvd. at Cahuenga Blvd. Alongside the Groundwork coffee shop. Lots of sex and violence in Machete, which is a forthcoming movie.

This photo, showing the tall building on the right, is the former corporate headquarters of the House of Blues. They have merged with Live Nation, which is a music event producer, located in Beverly Hills. The House of Blues logo is where the white square was at the top of the building. This is a sidewalk scene just above the Groundworks coffee shop, at another coffee shop called: Caffee, etc. I love this sculpture.

Tiffany - Actress or Logistician?

Your Hollywood Rounder was hangin' around Larchmont Village yesterday. Tiffany, was on the Boulevard, helping Doctors without Borders. I couldn't get a superb photo of her, but she has blue eyes and some of the reddest hair I've seen in years. Tiffany is from Brainerd Minnesota, which is where Paul Bunyon and Babe, the Blue Ox live.

Dancing!!! In Hollywood? Authorities Notified - Step To Be Taken

Frankly, My Dear Readers I hope you are as shocked as I am to learn that a DANCE HALL is opening in Hollywood California.

Your Rounder, walked out of his abode and onto the street to bring you all the latest gossip and truth.

This sign, a sign of infamy, surely, was stuck on a doorway, on Argyle Street, which is a side street in Hollywood. Running north and south, the first street east of Vine is a place where most people do not visit. Not dangerous mind-you, it's just a side street and there is nothing there. Well I though there was nothing there until I got a picture of this diabolical plan for a DANCE HALL.

This DANCE HALL is sure to bring an unsavory element to the W Hotel, of which I have posted before. Given the upscale standard of the W, I must say I'm shocked that a DANCE HALL would be allowed on their premises, which will be located at 6250 Hollywood Blvd. (Suite 1200). While the photograph is quite fuzzy, I'm pretty sure this Hall of Shame and Infamy is run by none other than Victor Drai, the second wickedest man in Hollywood.

Pawnee? Costuming at Selma and Vine

I was on my way to Trader Joe's today to buy some buttermilk and I chanced by the extras costuming and craft services. Lots of cute girls wandering around, all of them extras. Why gals wear high heel shoes to extra work I'll never guess. It's unlikely they will be wearing them once they are in costume. Hmmm ...

Across Selma, a group of photographers and sound men were milling around, waiting for something. I don't think they were papparazzi, but they could be.

I'm guessing that the name of the motion picture will be Pawnee. It could as easily be Pawnee Productions.

The Wiltern Theater and Koreatown

This is the Wiltern Theater. It is an Art Deco era building, located at the south-east corner of the intersection of Western Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard. The Wiltern went through a downturn a few years ago and was scheduled for demolition, twice. I'm still undecided on whether it was a good idea to save this structure. It's not "green", despite being clad in green terracotta tiles. Currently, the Wiltern is managed by LiveNation. I'm pretty sure they will keep it only while it is a top money maker. I will hate to see the building "go", but it's only a building. It is registered with the National Register of Historic Places.

Left, is the extension of the Wiltern Theater. On the far end is a Denny's (at Oxford Street). In the middle is a restaurant that also serves as a night club. For more on Koreatown nightclubs, see below.

This is a Koreatown nightclub, Le Cercle. I haven't been in it, and I cannot talk about what goes on there, but I'm pretty sure it has had differing owners in the decade it's been at this location, west side of Western Avenue, just a block below Wilshire. On the door it reads: "Super Club", but I think they misspelled it. They meant: "Supper Club".

This is the front door of Assi Supermarket. Don't ask me to say the name of this place, I won't do that for you. Every time I shop here I see something wonderful. Today the fish monger had lots of Mackerel. Fresh!!!.
